A telephone line distribution switch is a telephone line input that distributes up to nine telephone lines in different locations. This switch has a unique feature: the distributed lines cannot listen to each other. This means that when the telephone rings and someone picks up the receiver (to answer or make a call), they will take the call. At the same time, if other people in other rooms pick up their telephones, they will not hear anything until the first person hangs up. This applies to lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Lines 4 and 9 have special permissions; they can listen to any of the nine lines, but while they are connected to a line, no other line can listen to their call or take the line from them.
